Russia lures Americans in negotiations: why Ukrainians are less and less believe in a peaceful process

To spread: since the beginning of the war in the territory of Ukraine, Russia is gradually exceeding the United States in negotiations concerning the end of the conflict. American diplomacy is not capable of competing with experienced former Soviet officials who have decades in negotiation and have a good understanding of the situation in Ukraine. This opinion was expressed by NATO analysts and officials who are concerned about the development of the peace process, reports The Washington Post.

The Trump administration has repeatedly stated progress in peace negotiations, in particular on partial ceasefire at energy infrastructure and in the Black Sea. However, different sides interpret the agreements reached in their own way, and the fighting continues without significant changes. During his election campaign, Donald Trump assured that he would be able to complete the conflict in 24 hours.

However, the real negotiation results have undermined the confidence in the ability of US representatives to provide impartial and effective arrangements. Thomas Graham, an employee of the Council for International Relations, said: "This does not necessarily indicate inexperience, but indicates the attempts of Trump administration to demonstrate progress, even if he is not real, hiding those challenges that are still ahead.

" At the same time, Trump's special ambassador Steve Witcoff called negotiations between the US and Russia presidents "epic", noting their extreme importance to global policy. But among Ukrainians, skepticism is growing in relation to the peace process. According to a survey of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology, 75% of respondents doubt that during Trump's cadence, Ukraine can expect a just peaceful decision.

The increase in fears is due to the fact that the Trump administration has abandoned a number of its powerful instruments of influence, in particular now is the normalization of relations with Moscow and the adoption of conditions of Russia, which allow it to preserve part of the captured territories and impose restrictions on Ukraine's accession to NATO.

The main envoy of Trump on Russia, Vitcoff, criticized for being a personal friend of the president, not an experienced diplomat specializing in Russian issues. Oleksandr Gabev, director of the Eurasian Center of Carnegie, noted that the US team does not have sufficiently qualified experts on Russia, which calls into question the objectivity of the negotiation process.

In addition, Vitcoff often repeats the Kremlin's propaganda theses, such as the statement that the Russian territory occupied by Russia seek to be part of the Russian Federation, although international law recognizes these referendums illegal.

During the negotiations after the telephone conversation between Trump and Putin, a 30-day partial cease to the energy sector was announced, but the Kremlin limited it only to energy infrastructure, which gives the impression of one-sidedness in the process. Subsequently, Russia released additional conditions, including the withdrawal of sanctions from Russian financial institutions, which required European support, which was not available.

Critics also indicate that Vitcoff supported several false statements of the Kremlin, which further discredits the US negotiation position. They believe that Vitcoff works more on the Kremlin's interests than the interests of their country. At this time, both sides are trying to maneuver to gain preference or avoid the military.

Russia seeks to blame Ukraine in the event of a failure to accuse Ukraine, hoping that it will end the US military and intelligence support - in her opinion, this will open the way to its military victory. Ukraine is trying to avoid this while continuing the struggle for its interests on all fronts. We will remind, Ukraine during the negotiations in Saudi Arabia on March 11 expressed its readiness for a 30-day ceasefire.
