Ukraine will not receive reactors for Russian nuclear power plants from Bulgaria: what is the reason

To spread: the Bulgarian government has decided not to sell two nuclear reactors from the unfinished nuclear power plant "Belen" for the Khmelnytsky NPP. This was stated by Viceremier and leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party of Atanas Zafirov, writes Forbes. The decision was supported by all coalition partners. The reason for this step was the need to develop its own nuclear power, especially in the face of increasing electricity prices in the world.

However, it can complicate the implementation of the project of construction of new units №3 and №4 of Khmelnitsky NPP. The publication notes that the cancellation of the agreement with Ukraine is jeopardy with another strategic project of Bulgaria - the construction of two new power units at the Kozloid NPP.

Although Bulgaria has already concluded appropriate contracts with the US company Westinghouse and South Korean Hyundai, part of the funding was planned to be provided with the sale of reactors from NPPs from Ukraine. In 2023, Bulgaria and Ukraine began negotiations on the sale of two nuclear reactors of Russian production, which were originally intended for the unfinished NPP "Belen". In February, the Ukrainian Parliament supported their purchase.

Both reactors were to be used for the construction of units # 3 and 4 of Khmelnitsky NPP. It was planned to spend $ 1 billion on modernization. The cost of the agreement was estimated at approximately 600 million euros. Earlier, Focus asked experts about the large construction of the KhNPP. Experts said that it would give Ukraine during the war. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that after the completion of the KhNPP's NPP units, Ukraine would have additional 2 gigattes of electricity.
