Radiation Scenario: What is behind attacks on Iran's atomic objects and what is Ukraine here

To spread: Iran's nuclear shock has revived the most terrible scenario - radiation infection. Is a new nuclear catastrophe in the modern world if nuclear infrastructure is becoming a target again? And most importantly, how close is this threat to Ukraine, where Russian drones have already hit nuclear objects. On the night of June 13, 2025, Israel spent large -scale blows to Iran's nuclear and military objects as part of an operation called "Rising Lion".

It is reported that underground and surface structures on objects in Nathang and Isfahan, in particular, have damaged laboratories, electric substations, uranium fuel production and gas and metal treatment. Several high-ranking Iranian soldiers were killed-commanders and generals of Quiri, as well as several nuclear scientists. At the same time, according to the IAEA, the main underground complexes of uranium enrichment - Natanga "Cascade" hall and Ford - remained intact.

Radiation levels in the area have not increased, both objects usually work. Also, NPPs, Tehran research reactor and a heavy water reactor in Khonbiobka were not injured. This fact confirms that Israel has probably deliberately avoided the destruction of nuclear fuel storage near Isfaghane - due to possible radiological risks or political restrictions. As a result of the attack, much of Iran's nuclear program remained intact.

Analysts indicate that this blow is an influential but not destructive part of the long -term campaign of Israeli to restrain the Iranian nuclear threat. Radiobiology Senior Researcher at the Institute of Security of NPP NAS of Ukraine Olena Penyuk says that a threat to nuclear facilities is a radioactive contamination of the territory. If there is no serious leakage of radioactive substances and there is no active nuclear reaction, then it can only be about local contamination.

"I have seen even joyful comments, they say, the radioactive cloud will go to the side of Astrakhan. But in reality, this will not happen - the cloud is unlikely to come, although some contamination is still possible. The consequences depend on the strength of the explosion and how high the radioactive particles were rising in the air. To be fixed, " - says Focus Penyuk.

However, the radiation levels that can be recorded do not pose a threat to human health, especially if they are far from the epicenter. Yes, the monitoring stations will be detected, but the radiation dose will be too low to have serious consequences. However, it is important for people who were near the object which radioactive substances have entered the air and how much the radiation dose has increased.

The scientist emphasizes that strokes on Iran's nuclear objects cannot lead to a global catastrophe similar to Chernobyl. "There were no strokes on existing nuclear power plants where there was no active nuclear response. Yes, some contamination is possible. But there will be no such level as after accidents at nuclear power plants. Substances are thrown out. There is an international Ines Scale Scale Scale Scale, which is used to classify incidents at nuclear facilities.

If this event has already been entered in the Register, then it will be possible to see its level on the Ines scale and find out what the consequences are the international community. According to the scientist, radioactive pollution cannot be achieved by Ukraine, because the wind is not blowing. But theoretically - possibly. At the same time, monitoring stations in Ukraine are very accurate - they can even detect individual radionuclides in the air.

"The concentration of radioactive particles that causes an increase in the dose is very small - but even it is fixed. Therefore, there is no threat to Ukrainians. However, if the wind is pushed in our direction, at stations around the Ukrainian NPPs and in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, these particles can be fixed," Pheniuk continues.

On April 4, 2024, a unique scientific object was disconnected during the night attacks of Russian "Shahmed" on Kharkiv - a subcritical nuclear installation "Source of Neutrons". The Neutron Source is the only subcritical reactor in the world activated by an electronic accelerator. It is used for research in nuclear physics, material science, biology, chemistry and production of medical radioisotopes. But the hostile blow did not cause a nuclear reaction.

The "neutron source" is only activated when electricity is supplied. In the off state, it does not pose a threat. The blow on did not cause radiation leakage. But he caused great harm to Ukrainian science. It was a unique installation that cooperated with the leading world scientific institutions. It allowed research in the field of medicine, metallurgy and more. These studies are now suspended or complicated, "the scientist explains.

However, according to Pareniuk, all Ukrainian nuclear objects are in at risk from Russia. " First, the Zaporizhzhia NPP is occupied. Sniper positions are equipped in its territory, military equipment is located inside - which is a gross violation of international standards. On February 14, the drone hit a new safe confinement, which is a damage to the nuclear object. Drones were also recorded near the South Ukrainian, Rivne and Khmelnitsky NPPs. This is a real danger.
