Putin announced a truce: analysts explained if this would bring peace in Ukraine

To spread: President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin announced a truce on May 9 and plans to use it for internal and external audiences. At the same time, the Kremlin head will use the lack of monitoring to stop fire and will be able to gather new forces to continue the war in Ukraine. About why Putin announced a truce, the report of analysts of the Institute of War (ISW), published on April 28.

Analysts explored a series of statements by the Russian President and his officials, events at the front during the Easter Armistice, as well as the reaction of the US and Ukraine. The ISW report notes that Putin ignores US President Donald Trump's proposals every 30-day ceasefire and subsequent negotiations. At the same time, the Kremlin head suddenly puts on his own proposals on his own conditions.

The peculiarity of the Putin truce-every time there is no mechanism of tracking, who adheres to it and who violates it. The Russians use pause not as a step to peace, but as a step to continue the war, summed up analysts. "Putin continues to abandon any ceasefire except the conditions contributing to his military efforts. Moscow is not interested in creating substantive monitoring mechanisms for ceasefire.

The report also explained what benefits the Russian Federation received thanks to Putin's 3-day truce. "Putin views the ceasefire as a chance for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to rest before future activity and as a way to guarantee that Ukraine will not strike a distant radius of action on the Russian Federation during the celebration. Putin probably does not consider the ceasefire for 9 May as a serious step towards establishing a strong peace in Ukraine.

" It should be noted that at 14 am on April 28, Putin announced a truce in the Russian-Ukrainian war. According to the idea of the Kremlin head, the ceasefire will last three days: from 0:00 on May 8 to 23:59 May 10. It is indicated that the fire stops on the entire front line. At the same time they will monitor the defense forces of Ukraine and, if they decide that there are violations, will restore hostilities, the Kremlin's statement is said.
