Russia has rejected the US proposal for negotiations on nuclear weapons control

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov linked Moscow's refusal to US foreign policy, which, in his opinion, is aimed at "undermining the security and interests of Russia. " The White House stated that Russia had rejected the US proposal to discuss control over nuclear weapons. Moscow also does not make any alternative proposals on this issue. This was reported on January 18 at Defense One.

Senior Director of the National Security Council, Prano Vaddi, noted that the negotiations would discuss the compliance with the contract, its extension after the expiration of the period in 2026 and the management of nuclear risk. The proposal was made in September, when US officials proposed to hold a new negotiation on a new agreement to restrict strategic offensive weapons (SNOs), which is currently the only agreement on nuclear weapons control between the two countries.

However, Russia sent its refusal to private in December, and on January 18 it announced it in public, said Vaddi. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has associated Russia's refusal to US foreign policy, which, he said, is aimed at "undermining Russia's security and interests. " In this regard, Vaddy stressed that Moscow's desire to associate nuclear negotiations with other security goals, such as the termination of NATO expansion, is a "high bar".

"Despite the lack of activity by Russian officials, they are likely to sit at the negotiation table before the contract expire in 2026," the US official suggested. We will remind, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov during a press conference on January 18 stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin never threatened nuclear weapons, "unlike Europeans and Americans.
