Allowed to supply oil and gas from the Russian Federation: Orban after meeting with Trump "bragged" about exemption from US sanctions

Share: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, after a meeting with US President Donald Trump, announced that he allegedly received guarantees from the American side regarding the exclusion of his country from the sanctions against Russian energy carriers. The Hungarian politician claims that the US, in particular, exempted from sanctions two pipelines that ensure the supply of Russian oil and gas to the country. Orban said this during a briefing with Trump, writes the Hungarian publication Telex.

According to the official, Hungary received an "exemption" from sanctions in particular with regard to the Druzhba and Turkish Stream pipelines. "We agreed, the president made a decision and said that these sanctions will not be applied to these two pipelines," Orban said. Politicians agreed on this "behind closed doors," the media writes. Orbán asked for Trump's sanctions to be lifted "after a joint determination" that the specified pipelines are of "key importance" for Hungary's energy supply.

In this way, Viktor Orbán made it clear that Hungary will continue to buy oil and gas from Russia. At the same time, Donald Trump did not deny Viktor Orbán's statements during the briefing, although he did not express his support for them, the media clarified.

"During the public part of the working lunch, Trump was lenient on this issue, but it was not entirely clear whether Hungary would not face obstacles if it continued to import Russian energy carriers, but judging by Orbán's statement, he received this approval behind closed doors," the media writes. In addition, Viktor Orban also announced that the USA will exempt the construction of the Paksh-2 nuclear power plant under the Rosatom project from sanctions.

"We are also developing new forms of US-Hungarian financial cooperation to strengthen and preserve Hungary's financial stability," the Hungarian Prime Minister emphasized. It is worth noting that Hungary allowed Russia to expand the Paksh NPP, which is the only operational nuclear power plant in the country, implementing the Paksh-2 project as early as 2022. It was reported that Rosatom plans to build new power units here, namely the 5th and 6th, doubling the capacity of the nuclear facility.
