Strategist Weapons: Pentagon first showed the latest nuclear winged rocket AGM-181 LRSO

To spread: The US Air Force first published a render of a new farm winged rocket AGM-181a Long Range Standoff (LRSO), which is developed as the main means of delivery of nuclear charges of American strategic bombers. It is intended to replace the AGM-86B ALCM rocket as part of the modernization of the American nuclear triad. The platform for the future LRSO will be bombers B-52 Stratofortress and B-21 Raider, which can also be equipped with nuclear bombs B61-12 and B61-13.

This was reported on June 11 by the Defense Industry Europe. It is noted that although the render is probably partially changed in order to keep secrecy, it gives a general idea of the design features of promising weapons developed by Raytheon. The image presents a winged rocket, made according to the low -planning scheme with the lower placement of the vertical plumage. The wing is distinguished by moderate boom and large area.

It seems that the aerodynamic form of the body was formed taking into account the requirements for inconspicion: flat surfaces, smoothed outputs and minimization of the elements that protrude. There is no image of the air intake and engine nozzle on the render - these elements are probably hidden structurally inside the body or masked to reduce radar.

Defense Express analysts noted the similarity of AGM-181A with the former American nuclear wing of the AGM-129 ACM rocket, which was developed in Raytheon, and it was in service from 1990 to 2012. It is known that AGM-181A will be equipped with a W80-4 thermonuclear charge and is more than 2400 km. Currently, the developed warhead must be ready for operation by 2027. As part of the LRSO, 1020 AGM-181A units are planned-all in the nuclear configuration.

The refusal to equip the rocket with ordinary combat units is explained by the high cost of the project, which is estimated at $ 16 billion, with the cost of one rocket - $ 14 million. Recall that on June 11, US President Donald Trump demonstrated a new container starting unit to launch missiles M270 and Himars, as well as Ballistic ATCMS and the latest PRSM.
