Russian missile punches can lead to nuclear catastrophe - The Guardian

Russian missile attacks last week have switched off electricity to Ukrainian NPPs, and this is a new threat to Ukraine. Last week, a massive rocket strike of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation led to shutdown of the power supply of four gas stations in Ukraine. Because of this, the stations moved to the emergency mode. Against this background, fears are growing that Russia's attacks on the Ukrainian power system will jeopardize the safety of nuclear power plants, The Guardian writes.

According to President of NAEK, Energoatom, Peter Kotin, during the massive Russian missile shelling on Wednesday, November 23, all the security mechanisms of the Ukrainian NPP worked properly, but two generators were damaged, which detained the restart of two reactors. According to Kotin, repeated shutdowns caused by new Russian rocket strokes can cause significant damage to NPPs, which can seriously affect Ukraine's energy supply and possibly nuclear security.

And such rocket strokes on energy infrastructure, according to Ukrainian intelligence, can be caused by Russia in the middle of next week. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhya NPP was captured by Russian troops in March this year, and in September it was disconnected from the network because of frequent shelling around its territory.

The three other NPPs-Rivne, South-Ukrainian and Khmelnitskaya-were not the direct purpose of Russia's recent missile attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. At the same time, rocket strokes on high -voltage power lines, transformers and substations have led to the first in the history of simultaneous disconnection of all four NPPs.

According to Mago's CEO, Raphael Marianne Grossi, the full and simultaneous loss of external power supply of the Ukrainian NPP shows that the situation with nuclear security in Ukraine is becoming more unstable and potentially dangerous. According to Kotin, nothing has happened for all 40 years of work of the Ukrainian NPP. According to him, all Ukrainian nuclear power plants have multi -level protection to avoid a catastrophe similar to an explosion in Chernobyl.

Kotin believes that recurrent missile attacks can lead to more emergency shutdowns, which, for its part, can have unforeseen consequences and will threaten Ukraine nuclear security as a result. Experts suggest that frequent emergency disabilities can lead to accidents at stations. Focus has already written in detail about rocket strikes in Ukraine on November 23 and about the violation of three Ukrainian NPPs.
