Without Transnistria: A referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU will be held without a Russian enclave

The President of the country May Sandu noted that residents of the left bank of the Dniester can come to vote at the polling stations on the right bank. The referendum on the entry of Moldova into the European Union will take place without the involvement of the territory occupied by the Russian Federation. This was stated by Moldova President Maya Sandu in an interview with the Romanian edition of Veridica on Wednesday, December 27.

She added that it was impossible to organize a transparent plebiscite in Transnistria, since this region is not controlled by the Moldova authorities. "Polling stations cannot be opened in the Transnistrian region because it is not controlled by constitutional bodies," Sandu emphasized. At the same time, the leader of Moldova noted that residents of the left bank of the Dniester can come to vote at the polling stations on the right bank.

Sandu signed an application for Moldova's accession to the EU in March 2022. Within a few months, Chisinau acquired the status of a candidate for EU members. On December 14, 2023, as a result of the EU summit, the European Council decided to start negotiations with Moldova to join the European Union. On December 24, the President asked the country's parliament to hold an EU membership in the fall of 2024.

Earlier, Sandu suggested that her country could join the European Union by 2030 with the unrecognized Transnistria, although now this region is not controlled by Chisinau. At the same time, the EU was not excluded that the introduction could occur without Transnistria. We will remind, earlier NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, on October 26, adopted the head of the Moldovan government of Dorin in the headquarters of the Alliance.
