Up to 5.8 million shells: DPRK has become a key supplier of ammunition for the Russian Federation - investigation

To spread: North Korea has become a critical partner and ammunition supplier for Russia. Over the past 18 months, the DPRK has handed over 15 800 ammunition containers to the Russians. Reuters conducted its own investigation with Open Source Centre analysts. Experts found at least 64 supply from North Korea to Russia from August 2023 to March 2025. According to information, Russia received from North Korea from 4. 2 to 5. 8 million ammunition.

Supplies were made with the help of four cargo vessels under the Russian flag: "Angar", "Lady R", "Maria" and "Maya-1". "The supply of ammunition from North Korea allows Russia to maintain an offensive impulse and significantly undermines the efficiency of Western military support for Ukraine," analysts say. They also warn that this weapon flow can change the balance at the front in favor of Russia and create new risks to Europe.

The investigation of the publication confirms that Russia depends largely on the DPRK's supply, which provide up to half of all artillery shells used on the front. In some periods of 2024, Russian units actually used ammunition from North Korea. Ukraine's military intelligence reports that North Korea has provided more than 4 million artillery shells to Russia, most of which are 122 mm and 152 mm caliber, which is the basis for Russian artillery.

According to the head of GUR Kirill Budanov, these supplies are key to support Russian hostilities. In addition to ammunition, the DPRK also handed over rocket systems and longitudinal artillery to Russia, as well as sent its units to the Kursk region. Analysts warn that without the support of North Korea, Russia could significantly reduce the intensity of its shelling.

They also emphasize that this cooperation poses a serious threat not only to Ukraine but also to regional security, in particular in East Asia. It should be reminded that North Korea's military who participated in the battles in the Kursk region of Russia adapted to modern combat tactics, which made them serious opponents for Ukrainian troops. Kim Jong -in also created a new class of warships, each of which is able to accommodate dozens of vertical launches for missiles.
