Major General of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Deputy Commander of the 41st General Army Andriy Sukhovetsky died on February 28, 2022 near Mariupol during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On March 4, Vladimir Putin personally confirmed the death of Sukhovetsky. This was the first case when the Russian authorities officially recognized the death of its general.

Military historian Jack McKoll noted that Sukhovetsky became the second Russian general, who died in a direct battle with Ukrainian troops, after liquidation of UPA soldiers of Soviet General Mykola Vatutin in 1944. As it was reported earlier, on June 11, Roszmi, Lieutenant General of the Russian Army Oleg Tsovkov was killed as a result of a blow to the winged Storm Shadow missiles. On June 20, Roszmi reported that the chief of headquarters of the 35th Army of the Russian Federation Sergey Goryachev was killed as a result of the joke of the rocket in the Zaporozhye region.

According to the BBC, Ukrainian sources also reported the death of seven Russian generals, but at least three of them - Magomed Tushaev, Vitaliy Gerasimov and Andriy Mordvichev - were alive, which was confirmed by video recordings and their participation in hostilities in Ukraine. There are currently no confirmed burial places or data on the other four generals reported by the Ukrainian media. However, the death of the highest officers has a significant impact on the Russian army.

Experts say that the death of generals may be related to problems in the organization of the Russian army. At the beginning of the invasion, the generals had to personally control the advanced because of the complexity with the adjustment of protected communication channels and logistics, which increased the risk of their death. Later, the generals were victims of accurate strikes of the artillery systems of the long -range radius of action delivered to Ukraine by its Western allies.
