NATO life: How to organize a military unit with friendly and loyal neighbors

The path of Ukraine in NATO is incredibly difficult, despite all the merits of confrontation with Russia. But maybe expert Rostislav Demchuk suggests, go the other way - and form a block with Eastern European friends? Memories from not so far, but well -faint in international politics and diplomacy of the past . . . I give my head to repel that from a number of today's young journalists, and young diplomats, no one knows what weu's abbreviation means with what it is eaten with.

A few decades ago, when I was delegated to work in Brussels to work in EU and NATO international institutions, I was already well succumbed to how all these structures work, interact with each other and who is whoh in these international organizations. But to study the activities of the Western European Union (Western European Union) and I had to get accreditation there, as they say, from scratch.

So! Western European Union - an organization created on the basis of the Brussels Treaty of 1948 on cooperation in economic, social and cultural industries and collective self -defense. (Was created a year before NATO foundation). In fact, this union was a forerunner and prototype of NATO and the European Union. The main function of the Western European Union was to collective security and defense against external aggressors.

The organization in 1948 included Belgium, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and France. Why did I mention the Western European Union, which existed from 1954 to 2011 and was dissolved? He came to me in connection with yesterday's statement by German Chancellor Olaf Solz that "until the war is ongoing in Ukraine, it cannot become a member of NATO.
