Cereteli also worked on the interior decoration of the Moscow Church of Christ the Savior, whose service is often visited by the head of the Kremlin Putin.

Ceretelli was generally close to Putin-in the mid-2000s he even created his bronze sculpture in more than two human growth. In March 2014, Zurab Cereteli, along with a number of other Russian figures, signed a letter in support of the Russian Federation's intervention in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. He later created several sculptures to be installed on the occupied peninsula. In 2017, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture added Cereteli to the list of persons who threaten the national security of Ukraine. Recall that in 2013, Zurab Tsereteli opened a bronze monument to the Holy Apostle Paul in Greece.
