Study in the war in Ukraine: Israeli company modernized T-72 tanks for Azerbaijan

The tanks received additional KONTAKT-5 jet armor modules for the tower and sides. It is protection against cassette ammunition and kinetic shells. At the ADEX 2024 International Defense Exhibition, Azerbaijan presented a modernized version of his T-72 tanks in Baku Azerbaijan. The modernization program takes into account the lessons extracted from the war in Ukraine and reflects the need to increase fire capacity and protection of armored vehicles. The tanks were updated in cooperation with Elbit Systems - an Israeli defense company specializing in advanced defense technologies with which Azerbaijan cooperated before. The upgraded T-72A tanks are equipped with a modern sighting system and the advanced fire management system developed by Elbit Systems. These innovations increase firing accuracy and efficiency.

Autonomous fire control systems will allow the Azerbaijani forces to maintain prompt advantage and more effectively impress goals day and night. The new system brings together day, night and laser channels, provides commanders and gunners with a full range of guidance tools. At the same time, the Azerbaijani engineers have retained some elements of the old Kontakt-1 armor, probably because of the ease of repair in the field. Azerbaijan has a significant T-72 tank park, including the original Soviet T-72A and T-72B, as well as the modernization of the T-72 Aslan. Recall that the United States has allocated a new $ 375 million aid package to Ukraine, which, among other things, included ammunition for Himars and artillery.
