Only four cities for the whole year: analysts told what the Russian Federation was able to reach in 2024

Experts noted that during the year the occupation army of the Russian Federation lost 427 thousand soldiers. According to them, the Russians will take more than two years to capture the whole Donetsk region. In 2024, Russian troops won 4 168 square kilometers, including mostly fields and small settlements in Ukraine and Kursk region. This is stated in the report of the American Institute for War Study (ISW).

The analysts of the institute noted that the Russian military command mainly prioritized efforts to capture the rest of Donetsk region and create a buffer zone in the north of the Kharkiv region in 2024, but could not achieve these goals. The institute emphasized that according to Western and Ukrainian sources, Russia planned to seize the entire territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions by the end of 2024.

However, the slow promotion of Russian troops at the beginning and mid -2024, forced the Russian military command to overestimate its plans and identify the main offensive task by the end of the year of Pokrovsk. The ISW reminded that Russian troops have seized four settlements of medium size for the whole of 2024 - Avdiivka, Selidovo, Coal and Kurakhovo. Most of them were more than 31 thousand people of the pre -war population. However, in December, the successes of the Russians slowed down.

"It will take Russian troops for a little over two years to capture the rest of the Donetsk region at the rate Like small villages and fields, ”the ISW report reads. Analysts noted that in order to implement such plans, the Armed Forces still should stop Russian troops from promotion in their priority sectors. Therefore, the assistance of the event remains critical for Ukraine's ability to stabilize the front line in 2025.
